Upon arrival, meet and greet by our local guide. Head to Noboribetsu, known for its natural hot springs. Visit Jigokudani (Hell Valley), a volcanic crater with steam rises from the mountains, hot water bubbles up from the geyser and yellowy gray volcanic gas seeps from the surface of the rocks. This makes the whole place smell strongly of sulfur, and gives it an image like that of hell. The valley is a 450-meter-diameter mouth of a volcano, which produces 3,000 liters of hot water per minute. Interestingly stone demon statues big and small decorate the city center. Next, drive to Showa-shinzan or Mt Showa meaning new mountain basically a volcanic lava dome formed after several earthquakes. Visit the Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch to see the standing up brown bears. There are about 100 bears and you may photograph or buy some fruits to feed them. In the evening enjoy a therapeutic hot spring bath at the onsen.
